We had initially hired John and his team for minor repairs and projects(installing a bay window seat, bathroom work)n and we were extremely happy with his work. When we decided to renovate our basement, we turned to John Clayton and his team for the project given his excellent track record with us. The comprehensive renovation involved opening up walls, installing plumbing, building a full bar and TV built -ins, installing a bathroom, painting and all the electrical work. John delivered and we are extremely happy. He hit all the major timing goals and was very open about them as well. Would recommend Clayton Contracting from minor repairs to full scale renovations.

I worked with John and his team on multiple projects including a big basement renovation and couldn't be happier. Clayton Contracting has a broad range of skills and experience which were invaluable in designing aspects while also keeping in mind cost.
There was great communication as I was regularly in contact with John including nights and weekends (sorry to his wife and kids!) which is rare as most contractors are difficult to get in touch with, especially after they have your money.
He is honest, always a man of his word, and thought his pricing was very fair including no unexpected increases without a detailed and valid explanation.
I continue to work with him on smaller projects and happy to report he approaches those the same as he did for the big jobs including being very responsive.
I highly recommend Clayton Contracting for any of your home improvement needs

As good as it gets. Clayton Contracting has worked on my home multiple times - to finish our basement and also refinish our bathroom. Both were done in record time, at record cost, and perfectly. I would like to point out in particular one aspect of CC that is unusual - John and his crew are people of the highest, highest reliability. They arrive when they say they are going to arrive and are people of the utmost honor. CC worked in my home for weeks when I wasn't there, locked up, took care of my belongings, etc. John is such an agreeable character, and his insights and maniacal perfectionism - and guarantee to follow up - make him in our estimation a unique "contractor of contractors." His prices are unbeatable
Please find below my reference for John Clayton. Pictures of my basement are on John's website. I enjoyed working with him- he does tasks large and small, which is nice since some contractors will just do part of the job and then leave you to do the painting, etc.

John Clayton renovated my basement, grinding the concrete and putting down epoxy on the floors, installing a sump pump and battery backup, and performing water sealing. We started the project during the intense rain and flooding of March 2010, which meant water was actively coming into the basement during the entire job. John was very quality oriented during the job, delaying his schedule where required to let areas dry. He was as invested in a dry outcome as I was and did not cut corners. He dug the sump pit which was actively filling with water so that we could pump it out (it was very muddy, and then he also cleaned it all up). Other contractors tried to take advantage of me by planning to route the sump pump output in a configuration that was not to code. John took the output all the way to the street (as per code) and even reseeded the grass over where he dug the trench, he also fixed the curb up better than he found it. He and his family did most of the work themselves, I left them in the house to go to my office and always came home to find John still working (after 10 hours), or he would call to let me know he was locking up. During the payment schedule, at one point I made a math error and overpaid John by $300. He let me know right away. He also called me to let me know when he would be even 5 minutes late. He also followed up a month or so after the project to make sure everything was working ok. Everything passed inspection and is working well.
We're re-doing our first floor powder room ourselves and it'll end up costing us about $2500. It was a total gut job. But the best money we spent on the project so far was paying someone else to do the demolition. Two professionals demo'd that room in 4 hours and I had ZERO mess left behind to clean up. They took great care to give hubby a fresh slate to start with. I was so happy they protected the original millwork so we could re-install it later. And, um, did you get that part about ZERO mess? I thought we'd be in a plaster dust cloud for the rest of the summer, but - nope. That would've taken my husband at least 2 vacation days and a lot more mess & hassle. For what you would pay for a dumpster rental, it's only slightly more money to have someone do the job AND haul it away. I recommend John Clayton Contracting. I got their number from another MOL thread and they were so much easier to work with than the other contractors I spoke with. They were lifesavers for us and I will definitely be calling them again in the future.
We are also happy to provide John a reference. He has done two jobs for us and we have been pleased! The first was a small cabinetry job, which came out beautifully and helped us to not have to replace our kitchen cabinet.
The second job was larger - John & Michelle basically rebuilt our garage from the ground up. They really went above and beyond to demonstrate their skill and conscientious work habits. They helped us to make decisions about how to proceed and were very thorough with clean-up at the end. I liked knowing exactly who was going to be at our house every day!
We look forward to working with Clayton Contracting in the near future on our basement and other projects - highly recommended!
Best,
Jan
I am more than happy to provide a reference for John.
He has done work on both my home and on a commercial property I take care of. All his work has been top-notch, and he genuinely cares about the quality of his work. I have been very impressed with John's diligence and his genuine desire to make sure that I am pleased with his work, which I greatly appreciate.
If you want any details about the work he did for me, just ask. He has done several projects, ranging from structural to cosmetic and I have been unequivocally pleased with everything he has done.
Best,
Rich
My wife and I hired Clayton to finish our basement. Over the course of about 5 weeks John completed the project with the utmost professionalism and courtesy. It is hard to overestimate the quality of the work performed and the impeccable and honest service we received from John and his group of expert workers. First, we received prompt (within the hour) email updates about when he and the workers would come, and what they would do. Second, the complete plans and outlines of what were to be done were constantly updated with our agreement, so that we always had an understanding of what the final product would be. Third, although this was something of an "open-ended" contract in the sense that various unexpected details were inevitable, John stuck to his original price and never once tried to overcharge us. In fact he threw in quite a lot free of charge. Fourth, the quality of the work was extraordinary. John built a sequence of cabinets and shelves - about thirty feet in total - that are breath ... He was recommended by Binsky Plumbing, who gave him the highest ratings. We are definitely planning on using him again for future restorations of our property. I am given to understand that he can basically do just about anything, as his website and facebook page indicate. HIGHEST RATINGS!!!!!!!
